Briefly

My name is Artis Vijups and I am a Latvian mathematician and programmer, completing my Bachelor’s studies in mathematics at Lund University in the summer of 2025.

I am a seven-time gold medallist across mathematics and informatics on a national level, and have represented Latvia and Lund University in international competitions, including the IMO, IOI and NWERC.

Since 2022, I have been working with Art of Problem Solving on providing various courses in mathematics and programming, but I am open to full-time opportunities anywhere in Europe, so be sure to contact me!

Extended biography

First competitions

I was born in Riga, Latvia and studied at the Riga Centre Language School before moving to the municipality of Salaspils, and the local Salaspils Secondary School No.1, at the beginning of Form 5.

In Salaspils, I was quickly given a first opportunity to take part in a mathematics competition, which was the 2014 RIMS MMC contest. There, I managed to finish in 1st place and win a bicycle, which I still use to this day.

That victory was very motivating. Also, the teachers in Salaspils noticed my potential and offered extra classes in mathematics and programming.

All of that work helped turn Form 7 into a fantastic year. I won four competitions, including the Latvian Open Mathematics Olympiad and the Latvian Open Computer Science Olympiad. I would go on to make four more appearances across those competitions, receiving a gold medal three times.

In Form 8, on my debut at the Latvian Informatics Olympiad, I managed to qualify for the European Junior Olympiad in Informatics, which was something me and my teacher did not even know I was in contention for. I went on to receive a bronze medal at the European event.

Further national triumphs

Beginning with Form 9, I became a fairly dominant competitor at the national level. I won:

  • gold medals at the Latvian Mathematics Olympiad in 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022,
  • gold medals at the Latvian Informatics Olympiad in 2019, 2020 and 2022 (no contest held in 2021),
  • first prize and a special award from the Riga Technical University at the Latvian Scientific Research Paper Conference in 2021 (article and the paper itself),
  • first place at the Latvian Artificial Intelligence Olympiad in 2022.

Overall, I collected 50+ national or regional victories over my eight years studying in Salaspils.

These victories helped pave the way for starts in many international competitions. I represented Latvia at:

  • the International Mathematical Olympiad in 2020 and 2021 (receiving two honourable mentions),
  • the International Olympiad in Informatics in 2021,
  • Baltic Way, a Northern European team math competition, in 2019, 2020 and 2021,
  • the Baltic Olympiad in Informatics in 2020, 2021 and 2022.

Move to Sweden

After finishing high school, I moved to Sweden to study mathematics at Lund University, a TOP 100 university worldwide.

There, I studied a broad selection of courses in fields such as numerical analysis, statistics, data science & AI, programming and even geographical information systems. My thesis involved implementing algorithms from randomised numerical linear algebra on a supercomputer, and it received a passing grade with distinction.

I have moved away from actively competing in mathematics or programming myself, with the sole exception in this period being a participation at the local ICPC contest called NCPC, where me and my team managed to qualify for the regional event, NWERC.

Also, in 2023, I volunteered for the European Girls Olympiad in Informatics held in Lund, and helped prepare a student from Salaspils for the Latvian Olympiad in Informatics, where he went on to receive an honourable mention on his debut.

On top of all of that, since January 2022 I have worked remotely with Art of Problem Solving in a fast-paced role helping run courses in mathematics and programming, including olympiad-level courses in both subjects.

This website

The website vijups.eu has existed as a personal landing page for quite a while now, but with more time on my hands after completing my Bachelor’s degree, I intend to build up the content here with writing on competition math and programming, as well as on some other related, and perhaps less related, subjects.

Be sure to check out the masterpost of projects I have worked on, as well as all the new articles on the homepage, and thanks for reading!
